Hockey EH?

So I wasn’t actually going to include this trip into my adventures, but it was my first holiday in 2015. Canada is my spiritual home, full of friends and family, so visiting doesn’t really feel like going abroad. With a bit of a rocky start, stuck in Heathrow for 5 hours due to a light fault on the aircraft, I started talking to people as we waited for our flight (the kilt attracts people). I met some cool people including Canadian Benjamin, on his way home from Africa, and Austrian Ali (remember the name, she may crop up in another adventure), on her way to a snowboarding holiday. Landing in Toronto that night, tired and hungry, I was met at the airport by the happy face of my uncle Graeme, who took me home, beered me up and made me feel welcome. My time in Ontario was busy and filled with loads of friends, so I’ll highlight some of my favourite points: Burns night with the family, Toronto Marlies with Craig, Oshawa Generals with Scott and Steph, CN Tower with Scott and Ali (see above), Walking across a frozen lake with Scott and Graeme, Visit to Grans, Marilyn Manson with Craig and Scott, Marvin Mason with Craig and Scott, Dinner with Derek, Craig, Heather and Rob, Gretzky’s with Scott, Superbowl with Stuart and Theresa Trailer Park Boys with Graeme, Lori and Craig, BEER, WHISKY, SNOW. My favourite has to be Burns night at Stuart and Theresa’s. The day started with Craig and me heading to see Toronto’s American Hockey League team. After a few beers we met up with Heather and Rob and went to Stuarts for Burns night. Arriving early we took Derek for some food down a local restaurant. On returning the house was full with friends and family. Drinking loads of beer (and loads of Stuarts single malt, hope he didn’t notice), I was honoured with the task of addressing the haggis, and then we played a game where people read out Scottish words and phrases and had to guess what they meant. After more drinking and fun I ended up teaching Theresa’s cousin some Scottish Country Dancing, bumping into tables, chairs and people as we danced. Of all the places I have ever been, Ontario will be my favourite. They say the difference between a house and a home is a home is where the people you love are, I can safely say Canada is my home.
