Oh Vienna

I enjoyed Bratislava, I really did, but stepping off a train in a city where the language isn’t completely unknown can be comforting. I’m not saying I am fluent in German, but I speak enough to hold a basic conversation and know enough that I can read some signs. Stepping off the train I was in awe. What a beautiful city. Add to this, the city was hosting the Eurovision song contest that weekend, so the city had a fantastic atmosphere. My first night in the city I found a brew pub and attempted (and I’m sure I succeeded) to drink all their own brews, I also had a couple of others off the menu. At this pub I met an American girl Claire and had a bit of chat. My second day I walked the city, took in the sights, went on the big wheel, walked in a park, drank coffee, ate cake and had a beer and went to the Eurovision village. Later I met my friend Ali (for you who read my Ontario post you’ll recognise the name), and we went to one of my favourite bars of all time. It had the feel of a hipster, dive bar, with an aged, moaning, hippy serving. The server had the appearance of a scary old woman from a Vincent Price movie, add to the fact the place was dark and the music was like a horror sound track, it was a strange experience. From the bar we went to a house party and watched the Eurovision Song Contest, had some drinks and some laughs. After returning to my hostel I shared a few drinks with an Irish man who lived in Vienna and liked to drink at the hostel to meet travellers. Nice guy if not a bit strange. My last day in Vienna was spent walking the city, drinking more coffee and enjoying cakes before my onward journey.
